What Does Toxins Mean?

Toxins are chemicals that can be harmful, usually fatal, to humans. Bacterial toxins are of particular concern to human health. Toxins can be produced by a variety of organisms and processes, though some toxins are more detrimental to human health than others.

Bacterial, fungal, algal and plant toxins have been widely studied in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s bio monitoring program and offers emergency laboratory services and information to scientists. With regard to other toxic substances, the manufacture and use of toxic substances, and the disposal of potentially toxic wastes is covered by EPA regulations and legislation including the Toxic Substances Control Act and the Pollution Prevention Act. The transport of toxic substances is governed by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
