Oxidizing Material

Last updated: August 5, 2018

What Does Oxidizing Material Mean?

An oxidizing material is a chemical that has the ability to easily decompose to release oxygen or an oxidizing substance. Oxidizing materials can be a hazard when they are added to a fire. They will provide the fire with more oxygen, which will cause the fire to expand. They will also cause a material that normally burns slowly in the air to more readily burn. In addition, oxidizing material may lead to a combustible source igniting without the presence of an ignition source.

Safeopedia Explains Oxidizing Material

In order to work safely with oxidizing materials, a worker must understand all of the present dangers. Workers should read the material safety data sheet that relates to the oxidizing material, which will provide information about incompatible materials. Oxidizing materials should be kept well away from flammable materials including paper, wood, grease, wax and plastic. An effort should be made to prevent the release of oxidizing materials into the workplace.
