Last updated: August 12, 2015

What Does Safety Alternative Methods Mean?

Safety alternative methods relates to the exploration of new or alternative ways of safety testing products which are to be released to the public. Traditionally, the primary method of safety testing in the use of chemical’s, pharmaceutical products, cosmetics, etc. has been animal testing. The shift toward finding alternatives by companies producing these products, is to obtain the support of shareholders and avoid the controversy of dealing with animal rights issues.

Safeopedia Explains Safety Alternative Methods

Some of the alternative testing methods that are being implemented include advanced computer simulation tests, with an accuracy of 90-95%, to test the effect of chemicals on skin. Other alternatives include the use of EpiDerm or SkinEthic (or synthetic skin equivalents) and EpiSkin (a model of reconstructed human epithelium). These are based on the principle that humans are the best test subjects for human products due to animals having different biology. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for ensuring that products like these are safe. The Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) provides regulations to accomplish this.
