Air Curtain

Last updated: November 10, 2018

What Does Air Curtain Mean?

An air curtain, or an air door, is a device that prevents air or contaminants from escaping from one area to another. The typical air curtain design is a fan mounted above the entrance to a building and pointing downward. It can also be an opening between two spaces kept at different temperatures.

An air curtain is, in its simplest application, an air barrier of a continuous broad stream of air that circulates across a doorway of a conditioned space. This reduces penetration of insects and unconditioned air into a conditioned space through a forced air stream over the entire entrance.

Safeopedia Explains Air Curtain

An air curtain provides protection against the external environment, improving working conditions and energy savings. Air curtains create a seamless barrier of air over doors, windows, or openings. They save energy and inhibit the entry of dust, dirt, and flying insects.

Air curtains have a broad range of uses where doors are required to stay open for operational purposes, including loading docks and vehicle entrances. They can be used to keep flying insects out through forceful turbulence, or keep out outside air. Minimizing air exchange between the outside and inside can help maintain a sanitary environment.
