The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) was formed in 1965 by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The primary mission of this specialized and interdisciplinary agency is to identify the causes of cancer via research that will subsequently allow preventive measures to be developed and implemented.

IARC’s independent role as an international organization facilitates research across countries and organizations. In terms of governance within IARC, there is a Governing Council consisting of representatives from the 25 countries that are members. This council also includes the Director-General of the WHO. The Scientific Council, on the other hand, is responsible for evaluating the agency’s activities.
IARC is not involved with issues of cancer treatment and care. The agency is also not involved in the implementation of control measures except when experimental intervention is necessary to assess the causes or mechanisms of cancer.
In addition, IARC publishes a series of monographs that contains information about cancer such as the agents, mixtures, or exposures that pose risks to humans.
