What Does World Health Organization Mean?

The World Health Organization (WHO) is the specialized agency of the United Nations that oversees and regulates health issues on an international level. The agency is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland and was established in 1948 with the objective to improve the health services of member nations, enhance the teaching standards in medicine and allied professions, and advise and help generally in the field of health.

The WHO functions as a regulatory and coordinating authority on international health by promoting uniform guarantee standards and international sanitary regulations. The WHO Executive Board consists of 34 Members technically qualified in the field of health and elected for a 3-year term to encourage and conduct research on problems of public health. To date, the constitution of the World Health Organization is signed by 61 countries and is responsible for the World Health Report.

As an independent regulatory agency, the WHO is financed by contributions from both member states and outside donors.
