Malnourishment is a physical concern that is a result of not consuming enough nutrients to meet the demands of the human body. Malnourishment can also occur if the diet is too abundant in certain nutrients to the extent that health problems occur. This may be the case in regard to any of the macronutrients.

Severe malnourishment can result in life long physical problems. These may include short stature, increased susceptibility to disease, and poor mental functioning. Malnourishment may result from not having access to adequate calories, not being offered adequate calories or not being able to absorb adequate calories.
