What Does Nuisance Material Mean?

A nuisance material is any material that leads to temporary irritation or discomfort, but does not produce any long term ill effects. A major nuisance material in the workplace is what has been termed by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) as nuisance particulate. This includes any solid or liquid airborne material that causes irritation. A common form of nuisance material is dust.

The nuisance material dust can be a major inconvenience in the workplace. While not directly being the cause of long term ill effect, it can be a contributing factor that may lead to accident or injury. Dust can reduce visibility and hearing by getting into the eyes ears and nasal passages. Every effort should be made, therefore, to reduce dust levels in the workplace and to ensure that workers are wearing appropriate protective equipment.
