What Does Ultraviolet (UV) Mean?

Ultraviolet (UV), in the context of occupational health and safety, is a wavelength of the electromagnetic spectrum that is shorter than those of visible light and longer than x-rays. This is a kind of non-ionizing radiation. The effect of ultraviolet radiation depends on the exposure time, the intensity of the radiation, the wavelength, and the individual's sensitivity to ultraviolet light. Instant or prolonged contact with ultraviolet emissions can cause painful eye damage, skin burns, premature skin aging, or skin cancer.

UV exposure is most commonly an issue in welding, biological labs and other areas where UV lights, Mineralights or mercury vapor lamps are used.

Several precautions should be taken by workers who are exposed to sources of ultraviolet light. Access should be limited to employees who are directly working with ultraviolet equipment in order to minimize exposure and reduce the hazards. In addition, limiting the distance and amount of time that an employee is working with or around an ultraviolet source considerably minimizes the risk for injuries. Many incidents of overexposure to ultraviolet emissions are caused because of employees not being conscious of the hazards associated with ultraviolet-creating apparatuses. To prevent mployees from being unknowingly overexposed to UV, equipment should include hazard labels. Employees should also be properly trained in the dangers of UV exposure, and be given access to personal protective equipment.
