Power

Last updated: January 15, 2019

What Does Power Mean?

Power is the rate at which work is done with respect to time. It is the amount of energy consumed per second. It can also be defined as the quantity of force needed to cause a unit displacement.

Power is measured in units, such as watt, horsepower, Joule per second, calories, and BTUs per hour.

Safeopedia Explains Power

Mathematically, power is work divided by time (power = work / time). The metric unit of the power is the Watt or Joule/second. The power of a motor is the product of its torque and the angular velocity of its shaft. All machines are designed to do work and, therefore, they are described by their power rating.

For the same amount of work, power and time are inversely proportional. Therefore, a more powerful machine does the same amount of work in less time. A human also has a power rating. Some people are more power full than others, meaning that they are capable of doing the same amount of work in less time or more work in the same amount of time. The integral of power over time defines the work performed.
