Last updated: November 30, 2017

What Does Point Source Mean?

A point source is an area or physical place or thing from which something is produced or released. In physics it can be defined as a source of energy including sound or light energy. In environmental science the term is applied to a source of pollution, and is contrasted with non-point source pollution, which can come from a wide area and not a point.

Safeopedia Explains Point Source

The term point source means discernible, defined or confined and discreet. As a source of pollution it is easy to identify as a primary cause or source of contamination. The term point source, when referring to pollutants, is usually associated with pipes or exits for exhaust or waste from an industrial process like waste-water management. It is important to remember, though, that not all pipes are point sources for pollution.
