Challenges with Leading Edges in the Construction Industry

Join the National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction. May 2 - 6, 2022.

The construction industry is one of the most dangerous in America, with falls from elevation accounting for 351 out 1,008 worker deaths last year (BLS). The National Safety Stand-Down raises awareness about fall hazards and fall related injuries before they happen by holding events all over the country!

This webinar will discuss some of the challenges and solutions associated with leading edge and sharp edge applications in the construction industry. Newer leading edge SRLs enable users to tie off at their feet in situations where there is no anchor available above the user’s head. However, many sharp edges exist on construction sites which can cause extreme danger to the SRL in the event of a fall over a sharp edge. This webinar will share how leading edge SRLs are designed to protect the user and the lifeline itself, including the use of energy absorbers to enable an SRL to arrest the fall without damage or failure.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understanding the Definition of a Leading Edge: A leading edge is defined as any unprotected border, perimeter, or opening where a fall hazard exists. It includes sharp edges and requires specific fall protection measures.

  2. Recognizing the Risks Associated with Leading Edges: Leading edges pose unique risks, such as increased fall distances and potential for severe injuries. Participants will learn about the importance of addressing these risks to ensure worker safety.

  3. Familiarizing with Standards and Regulations: Participants will gain knowledge about the relevant standards for leading edge use, including ANSI Z359.14, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.140 and 29 CFR 1926.502, and CSA Z259.2.2. Understanding these standards is crucial for ensuring compliance and creating a safe work environment.

  4. Identifying Compliant 3M Products for Leading Edge Use: 3M is a leading provider of fall protection solutions, and the webinar will highlight various 3M products that are specifically designed and tested for leading edge applications. Participants will learn about the features and specifications of these products.

  5. Understanding Leading Edge Clearance Requirements: The webinar will cover the clearance requirements for leading edge applications, including the setback distance, swing fall distance, and the clearance distance needed to ensure worker safety. Participants will learn how to calculate and determine the appropriate clearance for different scenarios.
