2 Top Hazards in Oil & Gas: Heat & Impact

Oil and gas production is a notoriously hazardous industry. Workers are at risk of crush injuries from heavy equipment, as well as heat stress related injuries from working in high temperatures. In addition, the industry is also vulnerable to a range of other potential hazards, including fires, explosions, and chemical leaks. As a result, safety is of paramount importance in the oil and gas industry.

Until all hazards are completely eliminated, we must understand where they exist, how to prevent them, and what protection and PPE we can choose in the case something does happen.

Join Chris Smith from MCR Safety as he guides us through the hazards in the Upstream, Midstream, and Downstream Oil & Gas sectors.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understanding the common hazards faced by workers in the oil and gas industry, such as impact, liquid, and abrasion, and the importance of providing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to mitigate these hazards.
  2. Knowing the importance of impact protection, specifically on the back of the hand, and the impact products available in the market that can prevent injuries resulting from the movement of material or the dropping of heavy equipment or piping.
  3. Understanding the need for FR (flame-resistant) protection due to exposure to flammable liquids, solvents, and lubricants in the oil and gas industry, and the importance of choosing the right FR gear that meets the highest level of protection against open flame.
  4. Knowing how to mitigate the effects of high heat environments and lower the injuries of heat stress by implementing a vented FR program, as wearing long-sleeve FR clothing can be dangerous during summer months.
  5. Understanding the importance of addressing overexertion and heat stress in the workplace, and the various ways to address them, such as through electrolyte programs, implementing a vented FR program, and addressing the issue of employees rolling up their sleeves due to the heat.
