What Does Exposure Mean?

Exposure refers to when an employee is subjected to a hazardous chemical in the course of employment through any route of entry (inhalation, ingestion, skin contact or absorption, etc.), and includes potential, accidental or possible, exposure. OSHA have detailed specific permissible exposure limits to ensue that employees are not exposed to hazardous levels of chemicals. Workplace exposure may relate to exposure to a noise hazard, chemical hazards and toxic substances and asbestos exposure.

OSHA provide maximum noise levels to protect workers from exposure to excessive noise levels. Exposure to impulsive or impact noise should not exceed 140 dB peak sound pressure level. OSHA's health communication standard is designed to minimize workplace exposure to chemical hazards by disseminating all relevant information regarding the risks and associated safety protocols associated with a chemical and sharing them with all relevant parties. OSHA set permissible exposure limits for all chemicals.
