NSF International (The National Sanitation Foundation) performs tests on safety cabinets to make sure that products meet the minimum standards for the classification of cabinet. These standards are defined by NSF and take into account design, construction, performance and field certification. Cabinets are assessed by an independent organization to pass a field certification. Cabinets are classified by the way in which air is recirculated or exhausted. There are classes 1, 2 and 3 which all have varying degrees of containment for levels 1, 2 and 3 bio-safety.
