What Does National Fire Protection Association Mean?

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is an American association that creates standards and codes for use by local governments. Most of these codes are safety related, including building codes, hazardous response procedures and codes that dictate the type of equipment local firefighters should use.

The NFPA's mission is to reduce fire hazards and their impact on quality of life through the provision of codes and standards as well as research, training and education. It leads educational campaigns such as Fire Prevention Week, which is held in October, to help educate the public as well as fire service professionals about fire hazards and fire prevention.
