What Does Center Of Visual Expertise Mean?

The Center of Visual Expertise (COVE) is a center that provides training about innovative visual literacy. This training program focuses on enhancing the observational ability for safety improvement at the workplace.

Safeopedia Explains Center Of Visual Expertise

Safety is one of the major concerns in the workplace, and a safe environment encourages people to do their respective jobs efficiently. A responsible person must know about all threats or unsafe conditions in the workplace, and it takes keen observation to notice such conditions that could cause harm to personnel. COVE trains people to realize the unsafe conditions and effectively fix them. "Seeing the Whole PICTURE" is one of the programs offered that trains people in this manner.

Visual literacy is a very effective approach to solving these workplace safety issues. According to research, 90% of what a person sees during a day is actually the information that the brain uses to fill in the blanks created in a person’s mind from past experiences and memories. Thus, keen observation with regard to the situation is very low. When a person overlooks certain aspects of a situation and makes assumptions, it can leads him or her to make mistakes. This issue can indeed be solved through visual literacy since the approach helps a person see more clearly. Moreover, visual literacy enables a person to process information more efficiently. In this way, a person can identify, interpret, and interact with the situation more competently.

COVE features workshops to train individuals about visual literacy. Individual consultation is a perfect way to enlighten people and organizations about visual literacy. The program also encourages individuals to complete hands-on exercises that help them effectively analyze the safety factor at the workplace. Below are the five basic steps followed in a visual literacy program from COVE:

  • Executive Overview
  • Foundations of Visual Literacy
  • Assessment and Design
  • Train the Trainer
  • Implementation Planning

COVE follows certain training modules while training individuals, and the modules help them apply the visual literacy approach to improve safety in the workplace. The first module is the introduction to visual literacy, in which individuals get a general understanding of the approach. The following are the training modules after the introduction:

  • Leadership
  • Audits and Assessments
  • Risk Observation
  • Incident Investigations
  • Non-Routine/Upset Conditions
  • Hazard Identification
  • Dynamic Risk Assessment

After all of these modules are cleared, COVE visual literacy training is complete.
