Last updated: August 27, 2017

What Does Inflammable Mean?

An inflammable substance is one that is able to be set on fire. It means the same as the word flammable. This can lead to some confusion, with some individuals thinking that it means the opposite of flammable; that is, that it cannot be set on fire. Potentially, this misunderstanding could be disastrous.

Safeopedia Explains Inflammable

The opposite of inflammable (or flammable) is non-flammable. Another word that is used as the opposite of inflammable, is incombustible. Because of its potential for misunderstanding, the word inflammable is rarely used. Instead the word flammable will be utilized to avoid confusion.
