What Does Rescue Squad Mean?

A rescue squad or unit refers to an emergency service organization that utilizes specialized equipment and skills in order to rescue persons who are trapped, search for and recover drowned persons, or perform any other rescue-related activity.

There are two types of rescue squads, those that rescue people who are trapped and those that rescue people with medical emergencies.

Rescue squads that rescue people with medical emergencies are also known as Emergency Medical Services (EMS), which provide out-of-hospital emergency medical care after patients experience trauma, including basic or advanced life support. This type of rescue squad is also known as a first aid squad, emergency squad, safety squad, ambulance squad, and ambulance corps.

Additionally, there are specialized rescue squads that may perform one or all of the following services:

  • Cave rescue
  • Search utilizing dogs for lost, trapped, or missing persons
  • Water rescue and recovery operations utilizing divers
