The Hazard Communication Standard provides uniform requirements to ensure that all chemicals manufactured in or imported into the United States are properly evaluated, reported on, and recorded.
Chemical manufacturers are required to analyze the available scientific literature in order to ascertain the hazards of the chemicals that they either manufacture or import. Manufacturers must label containers that leave their workplace, and obtain or develop a Safety Data Sheet for every chemical.
Chemical information must include:
- The physical and chemical characteristics of the hazardous chemical
- The known health effects (acute and chronic)
- Other related health information
- Exposure
- Precautionary measures
- Emergency and first-aid procedures
Any chemicals that have been evaluated and found to be a suspect or confirmed carcinogen must be reported as such.
