Last updated: February 1, 2017

What Does Dose Rate Mean?

Dose rate refers to the quantity of radiation absorbed per unit of time. Does rate is also known as rate of infusion. It is measured in units of microSeiverts per hour or microSeiverts per year. A similar measurement is radiation dose, which refers to the rate with which a person has been exposed to a radiation source.

Safeopedia Explains Dose Rate

There has often been some confusion between radiation dose and dose rate. The distinction can be clearly seen when considering the analogy of filling up a one litre kettle of water from a water tap. The amount of water in the kettle (the dose) is dependant upon the rate of water flow (the dose rate) multiplied by the filling time.
