The water table represents the level of ground water supply. In other words, it is the upper limit of the zone that is completely saturated with water.

For example, the depletion of the water table through overexploitation of ground water and resulting subsidence is a problem in California. More commonly, concerns about the water table are related to the pollution of ground water. For example, there are concerns that fracking activities may cause pollution of ground water, and the agricultural industry is among the industries implicated in ground water pollution.
