What Does Saturation Point Mean?

Saturation point is used in chemistry to refer to the point at which one substance can receive no more of another substance in solution, chemical combination, etc.. When a substance can no longer be dissolved, absorbed or otherwise combined with another, any further amounts that are added will appear as a separate phase. The saturation point of a solution is dependent on several factors.

Saturation in chemistry has diversified meanings, but these all have basis in reaching maximum capacity. The saturation point in a chemical solution in physical chemistry is dictated by the temperature and pressure a solution is at, as well as the chemical nature of the individual substances in the solution. An everyday example of an observable saturation point could be a sponge when it has reached the maximum amount that it can absorb.
