Open Canopy

What Does Open Canopy Mean?

Open canopy describes a kind of forest or woodland in which the tops or crowns of the trees do not touch each other or overlap, as with a closed canopy. This means that there are open areas within the forest where sunlight breaks through from the sky and passes between the gaps in trees and there are large, grassy, sunlit areas among the trees.

Safeopedia Explains Open Canopy

Whether a forest or woodland has an open canopy or a closed canopy is one of the main determining factors in the life that will be observed within the area. In a closed canopy, the life that survives on the forest floor is the kind which can survive in low-light conditions, while an open canopy provides more light to life on the floor. This factor has a large impact on biodiversity.
