Mutualism

Last updated: March 8, 2016

What Does Mutualism Mean?

Mutualism refers to the mutually beneficial relationship between two organisms or creatures. Mutualism is a subtype of symbiosis, which includes commensal and parasitic relationships as well. Unlike commensal and parasitic relationships where only one party of the relationship benefits from the association, both the parties of the relationship in mutualism benefit from the relationship and the relationship is detrimental to neither party.

Safeopedia Explains Mutualism

Mutualism is a type of relationship between two species where both species help each other to receive mutual benefit. Mutualistic relationships are common in nature, with one such example being the relationship between bees and flowers. When bees suck nectar from flowers, they get some pollen dusted onto them and transfer this pollen to another flower when they move on. This relationship provides food for the bee while helping the flower pollinate, benefiting both parties in the relationship.
