What Does Competent Person Mean?

A competent person is an OSHA phrase used to refer to a person who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions that are unsanitary, hazardous or dangerous to employees. A competent person also has authorization to take prompt corrective action to eliminate present hazards.

A competent person is knowledgeable about applicable standards and is capable of identifying specific hazards relating to particular operation. He or she also has the authority to correct that hazard. Certain standards add specific requirements, which must be met by the competent person. As of yet, there are no specific standards regarding competent persons.
