What Does Energy Mean?

Energy is a term with several definitions depending on the context of its use. In physics, energy finds its more accurate definition, which is universal to any definition in any other context. In physics, energy is defined as a fundamental entity of nature, which is transferred between parts of a working system in the production of physical change within a system. Simply put, energy is the capacity to do any form of work.

The term work is subjective and, therefore, energy is a broad concept and energy has different forms in the physical universe. The different forms of energy in physics have the ability to perform different kinds of work when they are converted from one to another. These forms of energy are subject to the laws of thermodynamics. Different kinds of energy include electrical energy, heat energy, chemical energy, and kinetic energy.
