Sustainable Tourism

Last updated: January 12, 2017

What Does Sustainable Tourism Mean?

Sustainable tourism is tourism that has no negative effects on the place visited. This concept would require health and safety plans that ensure tourists who visit a place will only ever have a positive effect while visiting, and no negative effects on the environment, economy and social structure of a place. A key part of sustainable tourism involves showing respect for those who live at a location, as well as the culture and customs of the area and its economy.

Safeopedia Explains Sustainable Tourism

It is next to impossible to have completely sustainable tourism, as every industry will have an impact on the world’s economy, social structure, culture and customs, as well as environmental health and safety. It is, however, possible to work towards better sustainability by planning and management. The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) hosts the Secretariat of the Tour Operators’ Initiative for Sustainable Tourism Development (TOI), a world-wide association of tour operators, which can exert direct influence on tourism to help create sustainable tourism.
