What Does RTECS Number Mean?

The RTECS Number is the identification number assigned by the U.S. Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances. RTECS stands for Register of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances. The registry was formerly maintained by the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The registry is now maintained by the private company Symyx technologies. A subscription fee must now be paid to access the database.

The Register of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances includes the following six types of toxic substances that produce the following effects:

  • Primary irritants
  • Mutagenic effects
  • Reproductive effects
  • Tumorigenic effects
  • Acute toxicity
  • Multiple dose toxicity

The RTECS database is available English, French and Spanish languages. A database subscription is available on the internet. The database contains about 155,000 terms.
