Last updated: January 9, 2017

What Does Polymer Mean?

A polymer is a chemical structure that is composed of small molecules that are arranged into a repeating pattern or structure to form a larger molecule. Polymers have a high molecular weight, which happens due to the addition of many small molecules or the elimination of water and condensation of molecules. There are many varieties of polymers created by different means.

Safeopedia Explains Polymer

Some examples of polymers include elastomers like rubber, plastics and different types of fibers. Polymers are made through assorted combinations of heat, pressure and catalysis. This alters the chemical bonding of monomers so that they link together in chains and form long lines of monomers that are attached to each other, which are called polymers due to the increasing in number of monomers.
