THE EARLY YEARS

The organization, presently known as STAUFFER GLOVE & SAFETY was originally started in 1907 in Palm, Pennsylvania by Al and Henry Stauffer under the name Acorn Glove Company. The operation was geared primarily to the production of a basic line of leather and cotton industrial gloves marketed to retail chain stores and wholesale distributors.

In 1955, the business moved to its present headquarters in Red Hill, Pennsylvania and was incorporated under the name STAUFFER MANUFACTURING COMPANY. After relocating, emphasis was placed on manufacturing cotton gloves. This included various weights of canton flannel single palms, double palms, hot mills, and jersey gloves.

In the early 1960's, a new sales approach was adopted to accommodate different market strategies aimed at supplying the end-user, namely industrial facilities. Selling direct to industry soon produced the largest volume of sales and resulted in the need for a full line of safety products. Over the years, domestic gloves from various other manufacturers, along with equipment for personal safety protection were added and now comprise a large part of the product line. In addition, direct importing was initiated first from Japan and later from Hong Kong, Pakistan, China and several other foreign countries around the world.

Early in the 1980's, manufacturing amounted to only 5% of Stauffer's total business. During this period all production facilities were moved from Red Hill and relocated. Stauffer had transformed from a glove manufacturer to a full-line Personal Protective Equipment distributor.
