Labor Risk Management: Is Safety Training Enough?

In today's world we have done a good job of getting to pretty low accident rates. It seems in many companies that is plateauing. This session will explore some thinking and methods to break through that plateau and create more reliability at the same time.

This session will lay out how the move away from accident prevention to a focus on exposure can be a game changer in safety. The notion of focusing on exposure is moving decision making from the unknown to the known. No one is able to predict whether there will be a negative outcome when we are doing our jobs if we let the exposure rise above acceptable levels. Anytime there is a variation in the way we have to get the work done people have to make a decision about how they are going to proceed. The fact is the way they make the decision is mostly on gut feel.

The way most people analyze the situation is against the likelihood of a negative outcome which is very imprecise at best. If we focus on exposure we know what that looks like and can deliberately manage it. We need to begging to help people get better at using exposure increase as a way to pause and make a better decision. I will also talk about how to internalize an exposure focus. There are techniques to help integrate this thinking into the organization. Until we start to do this we will continue to have people making decisions on the wrong goal and the negative outcomes will continue unabated.

This presenter will:

1. Explain the concept of exposure control vs accident prevention and the paradigm change that brings
2. Lay out how a shift to focus on exposure impacts decision making both individually and organizationally
3. Give concrete methods for moving the ability of the whole organization to recognize hazards, and, more importantly, respond to them appropriately.
